Objectively German internet speeds are lower than other countries, but do Germans really mind the speeds, or just the lack of coverage?

I did IT for a 50 employee company that happily shared a 10Mbit fiber link. Email, browsing, YouTube videos — subjectively, nothing felt “slow,” and no one had to verbally coordinate usage with other employees “can you stop watching YouTube, I need to download a windows update”. 200kbps per employee was just fine.

These days I work from gigabit fiber, but recently at a coffee shop I had to tether over a 110kbps Bluetooth connection. Despite the noticeable page-load times, I was able to work effectively for hours, no complaints.

I would say the average speeds the article derides are already incredibly usable.

> Why Germans put up with snail-speed internet

Because telecom companies have a revolving door in the German government.

Competition is almost inexistant, market is segmented, politicians are cheap, prices are high. Business as usual.

“still have to” should be added between “Germans” and “put”.
